The W.B. Nickerson Cape Cod History Archives celebrated the opening of a newly renovated space on October 9th 2013, after several years of planning. The new archives includes an enlarged reading room area for researchers, a multimedia classroom, display cases for rotating exhibits, and a secure climate-controlled storage space with enough shelves to accommodate the constantly growing collection. Nationally renowned historian and author Nathaniel Philbrick of Nantucket spoke at the Grand Opening event, where he described his own experiences as a researcher in the Archives and the importance of preserving local history. Also in attendance were Cape Cod Community College President Dr. Cox and honorary fundraising chairman Jan Nickerson Jr., relative of W.B. Nickerson. The renovation was made possible in part by generous private donors and a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
