Take a Peek at the Barnstable Patriot Collection

In 2014 the Barnstable Patriot newspaper donated a large collection of photographic prints, negatives and other materials spanning the years from 1830 to 2012 to the Nickerson Archives. We are pleased to announce that a small part of the Barnstable Patriot Collection is now open for use.

The Barnstable Patriot, which began publication on June 26, 1830, is the oldest continuous, uninterrupted publication in Barnstable County and is the seventh oldest newspaper in the United States.

The piece of the collection that is now open contains many photographic prints and negatives of people and places on Cape Cod, most of which were used in publication by the Barnstable Patriot  between 1876 and 1980.  A number of the people and places are identified but many are not, offering an opportunity for you to help with identification. Stop by and take a look. The collection also includes correspondence to the newspaper from such well known figures as President Herbert Hoover, the Kennedys, and others and a selection of correspondence related to Tom Skeyhill, an Australian writer and lecturer who had a summer home in West Dennis.
