We are excited to announce a new addition to our archives: the personal papers of local cartoonist and travel editor Clarice E. Welch.
Clarice E. (Cournoyer) Welch was born in 1925 in Somerville, Mass. She was educated at Bryant and Stratton and the New England School of Art. Her editorials, political cartoons, and travel articles were widely published in numerous newspapers and magazines during the 1970s and 1980s, including the Boston Post-Gazette, the Norwood Tribune, and the Lewiston Journal in Maine. “POL_I_TRIX”, a political cartoon created by Welch, was published in 43 different New England newspapers. She died in West Yarmouth on July 13, 2007.
The Clarice E. Welch Papers document Welch’s work as a published cartoonist and travel editor. The collection contains clippings of her work from newspapers and other publications, as well as unpublished drafts including sketches, notes, cartoons, and correspondence. The majority of the materials are dated between 1973 and 1981. Get a preview below, or stop by our archives to view the entire collection!
